Broad Brook Coalition
Background Information on the Broad
Brook Coalition
The Fitzgerald Lake Conservation Area is owned by the City
of Northampton and managed by the Broad Brook Coalition, a 501(c)(3)
organization (i.e., charitable organization) of over 200 individuals and
families, in collaboration with the Northampton Conservation Commission
for the purpose of conservation, passive recreation, and watershed
protection. The FLCA presently consists of 629 acres and contains forest,
open meadow, and wetland habitats as well as a 40-acre artificial lake.
The BBC drafts a Management Plan for the FLCA every 5 years, which becomes
part of the City's Open Space and Recreation Plan. The responsibilities of
the BBC include trail maintenance and improvement, invasive species
removal, native shrub planting, pasture mowing and periodic water quality
analysis, as well as a series of educational Walks and Talks.

About Broad Brook
Coalition
Broad Brook Coalition
(BBC) is a nonprofit, all-volunteer community organization dedicated to
the preservation of open space and the promotion of affordable
housing.
History
BBC was
organized by neighbors concerned about a planned development in Cooke's
Pasture, next to the Fitzgerald Lake Conservation Area. It was
incorporated as a 501(c)(3) [tax-exempt] organization in 1988. The
development was never built, but BBC remained active in pursuit of its
goals. In 1994, the City purchased Cooke's Pasture and added it to the
conservation area, with the help of $16,000 raised by BBC.
Management of the
Fitzgerald Lake Conservation Area
BBC and the
Northampton Conservation Commission have entered into an agreement for the
management of the Fitzgerald Lake Conservation Area. BBC organizes trail
improvement and maintenance and invasive species removal, as well as
educational Walks and Talks, in the conservation area.
The 554-acre*
Fitzgerald Lake Conservation Area is owned by the City of Northampton and
managed by the Northampton Conservation Commission, with the assistance of
BBC, for the purpose of conservation, passive recreation, and watershed
protection. It contains a 40-acre artificial lake, as well as forest,
open meadow, and wetland habitats. BBC drafts a Management Plan for FLCA
every 5 years, which becomes part of the City's Open Space and Recreation
Plan.
Land Acquisition Fund
BBC has
helped the City add to the Fitzgerald Lake Conservation Area by contacting
landowners in the area and raising funds. Since 1993, its Land Acquisition
Fund has contributed over $50,000 toward land purchases for the
conservation area, and 383 acres have been added.
Affordable Housing
BBC's
founders believed that open space preservation and affordable housing are
not incompatible goals. In recognition of that philosophy, BBC
contributes 5% of the income from its membership fees to the Northampton
Housing Partnership, and sends a team to make dinner at the Interfaith Cot
Shelter.
Organizational
Structure
BBC is a
membership organization run by a Board of Directors elected annually by
its members. The Board has nine members, three of whom must live in the
Broad Brook watershed. There are currently 141 members. Membership
costs $25.00, and membership forms are available at the FLCA trailheads.
Membership fees and all donations to BBC are tax deductible.
BBC's current Board
members are Robert Packard, President, Peter H. Searl, Vice President,
Norma Roche, Secretary, Alan Marvelli, Treasurer, Brian Adams, Robert
Bissell, Andrew Grimaldi, Frank Olbris, and Robert Zimmermann.
